The film revolves around a son who declares revenge on the villain, who betrayed and caused the mysterious disappearance of his father by stealing a diamond. The son in his attempt to recover his dues ends up stealing the villain’s precious diamond and also wins the heart of his sister, who runs away with him to Chennai to avoid a marriage with her brother’s henchman.
This film was one of the Biggest Box office torture at that time. In a particular scene Vijay penetrates deep into the soil and escapes. This scene was nominated for the best stunt in world cinema. This was one of vijays best Horror- comedy films. This was the first movie of Vijays super duper hit series such as villu, vettaikaran, sure.
Plot:
"Kuruvi" is the film that is said to be a big box-office hit which is starred by Vijay and Trisha, directed by Dharani, music scored by Vidhyasagar and Produced by Udayanidhi Stalin for Red giant Movies.
A few years back onwards there is a saying in South India that Tamil cinema has reached the standards of Hollywood. I had not believed that before, but recently a few films have made me to believe that. Kuruvi is one among those films. The reason for my belief is very simple, only in Hollywood( English ) films the heroes will fly from buildings to buildings and from buildings to a fast moving train to save people. In that type of films they will be disguised as Super Heroes and not ordinary men. Super man, Spider man, Bat man etc. are a few examples of that heroes. But now Tamil films wants to go a step far than the Hollywood and so they are making their heroes to fly throughout the film, even if they are disguised as an ordinary BOY . This is where Kollywood has reached the standards of Hollywood.
In this film kuruvi, as the name indicates a bird(sparrow) the hero Vijay flies throughout the film. He flies from the top of a high building to a fast moving train which is distanced nearly 50 meters without any equipments. Even he climbs the villain's house in Malaysia by flying from one floor to another.
After the success of "Ghilli" the same team is assembled and tried to make kuruvi a success. The film starts with a car race, where Vijay's (Velu, i think this name is sentiment for Vijay and Dharani combination) introduction is flying from a drainage man hole. He participates in the car race with a car that can't even run for 100 meters continuously. As usual he wins the race by accelerating the car using his mouth ( biting the accelerator with with teeth and raising the car, since the accelerator pedal was broken). After that he delivers punch dialouges and dances for a song (a usual Vijay formula). He flies to Malaysia (now only he flies in a flight) with his friend Vivek as a Kuruvi(a courier boy from India to Malaysia) to meet Suman(Gocha) a Don to get 50 lakhs that he have to give to his father Manivannan(Singamuthu).
There he is insulted by the Villain and his crew. He asks Vivek to touch any one finger to select the path to fight with the Villains, one way is justice and another is as usual by fighting (same as "Sivaji" where Rajnikanth tosses a coin and selects the path). He starts fighting, in between he meets Trisha(Devi) Gocha's sister. He steals a diamond from Gocha and returns chennai. Then the movie is full of fighting, flying, vivek's comedy, duets with Trisha until vijay comes to know his father is alive. He goes to "Kadappa" in "Andhra pradesh". There vijay fights Gocha's partner Ashish Vidhyarthi( Konda Reddy ), a local politician. After a one hour of running and fighting hero rescues his father and his co-workers. As usual Villain is defeated and Nasser (guest appearence as a police officer) shoots Gocha in climax. As expected Vijay is forgiven for murdering nearly 25 of the villain's men. There the story ends.
In this film "Happy New year" song by Yogi-B and Natchatra makes our money worth in theaters. Kuruvi is a typical Vijay film(since he does not tries anything new). It is a combination of "Ghilli" and "Sivaji".
Finally, it is not a Kuruvi (Sparrow), it is a Penguin in the disguise of Kuruvi (that is it won't fly).

My humble suggestion is :
1 ) Padathuku name "Kosu" nu vechirukalam - kadi thaanga mudiyala.... my sincere advice : Even if it is shown as "indhiya tholaikaatchiyil mudhan muraiaaga, thiraku vandhu silla maadhangale aana putham pudhiya thiraipadam" in TV, do watch it with "All out" or "Good knight"...
Look at the bright side : apadi vechirundhaangaana, kosu kootam ellam avangala pathi dhaan movie nu ADHUNGALAVADHU KOOTAM KOOTAM aa vandhirukum!!!!
2) Padathuku "E[housefly] or Kakka" nu vechiurkalam - Padathuku oru "eee kakka" kooda varala nu solla mudiyaadhula???
However, Even if you are amused by few scenes, no one should even try to clap their hands since many "E's" and "Kosu's" would be there to watch there show...
Btw, there was one lady [heroine aama!!] always doing all funny things and yea, she tried little bit of ....mmmmm... what they call??? mmmmmm.... oh yes, acting acting [i actually forgot - he he he] Idhuku "thrisha" edhuku?? Edhavadhu "orusha"va nadika vechirukalaame.. oops, i mean "aada" vechirukalaame!!!
And if you have noticed, that lady comes only exactly 1 min before a song!!! [I call her an "item" girl - only for songs and here they call her a heroine!!]
If only we were given Remote controls in Theatre's i would have seen this movie in 40 mins!!!!
After all the build up in vadivelu's style, you might wonder how come i mentioned all other details....
"naan venaamnu dhaan nenachen... appo inga oru ponnu, ivlo porumaiya point by point yosikiriye... NEE ROMBA NALLAVA nu sollitaapa....[mmmmmmmmmm]"
